Baxter International Inc. said Thursday that it is recalling all
remaining vials of its blood thinner heparin because of the risk of
allergic reactions.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has promo playing cards with the other
streetwear clothing of better auto insurance Schaumburg, Ill.-based APP Pharmaceuticals Inc.,
to meet demand for the product while the investigation into the risk
of Baxter's heparin continues, the agency said Thursday.
Baxter, based in Deerfield, Ill., said it is recalling all dose sizes,
streetwear clothes the "vast majority of the reports of adverse reactions" have
been linked to its multidose products. Baxter said it is taking the
action as a precautionary step.
Regulators said they still haven't found the cause of the side
effects, which include low blood pressure that can cause
life-threatening shock.
"We are determined to get to the root cause of these adverse events,"
said Sandra Kweder, deputy director of the Office of New Drugs at the
FDA.
On Feb. 11, Baxter temporarily halted production of multidose vials.
Besides low blood pressure, reactions included vomiting and difficulty
breathing. Four patients have died after receiving injections of
heparin, although the relationship to the drug was unclear, the agency
said then.
Attention has focused on a Chinese processing plant that is a source
for the main ingredient in Baxter's heparin. The FDA acknowledged it
had never inspected the facility, saying the agency mixed up records
on the supplier and another with a similar name. An inspection began
last week, according to the agency.
The FDA advised doctors Feb. 11 to prescribe heparin with caution,
rather than seeking a recall, in order to avoid a shortage, Kweder
said.
Heparin, used by millions of people, generates about $30 million in
house insurance sales for Baxter. The company produced about half the multidose
vials of volvo insurance drug in the U.S., according to the FDA.
In China, the FDA's two investigators have received cooperation from
authorities, said Michael Rogers, director of the agency's Division of
Field Investigations. The team is looking at workshops and farms that
supply the raw ingredient, derived from the intestines of pigs.
